Dias de Hospital / Days at hospital

Dear friends & visitors, I would like to inform you my wife is at hospital now. Yesterday, she, at last, gave birth our second baby after 42 weeks of risky pregnancy. She had to afford a cesarean that had some complications since the frontal part of her uterus was one-piece with the internal skin of her belly so it wasn't so elastic to produce a natural birth. The problem now is we don't know how many days the "cut" needs to get over.

The baby has small breathing problem because a small air bubble has been created in his right lung but the doctor think 2 or 3 days would be enough to be ok.

As soon as we are back at home, i will complish of my promises ( AT LAST!!!!!!!!!) & all the movies & packages will be sent.

See you in some days with new updates about IFD & Filmark movies.

Rarest of the rarest, the most obscure of the obscure

I have been trying to compile a list of each & every title ever came from IFD, Filmark & Asso Asia. IFD is still working & distributing movie rights in thos most famoues film markets but Filmark & Asso Asia are very different subjects to study.

Asso Asia was created during an interlude of time between the fisrt age of IFD & the birth of Filmark International. The problem to get a definitive list of Asso Asia movies or a full list of each title is quite hard to do because the films produced or distributed by the company founded by Tomas Tang & Joseph Lai were divided into Lai & Tang after the latter decided to go his own way when founded Filmark International. I mean, some titles from Asso Asia are now in the catalog of IFD & others were on Filmark's.

Till now, I thought Asso Asia only distributed Korean martial arts films that used to imitate models from Hong Kong or Taiwan, but once again, I was wrong. Few days ago, while I was surfing in the net searching for some information I found that Asso Asia also produced, at least, a women in prison explotation film titled Strike of the tortured angels.

the art cover looks like those japanese pinku eigas from the 70's. I love it!

I don't have a clue about what this movie is about. Never listen about it & it is not listed in any database. Luckily, I have been able to contact a Spanish friend who holds a copy of it dubbed in English & I hope to receive it in few days, if my wife & baby to be born are ok.
Anyway, it is a fact of time this movie arrives to my hands.
There is a title on IFD catalog titled Angels with golden guns ( Virgin Apocalypse) that looks like similar to this one. I only wish Strike of tortured angels has at least few lines of plot. The experience of watching Angels with Golden pistols was more than enough even for a IFD fanatic as me. I only say I have watched it 3 times & I still don't know what the movie is about.

Great title, great art cover, bizarre movie, but where is the plot?

The second surprise of the day came from Filmark International. Catroxp, one of the webmasters of http://subsploitation.wordpress.com/ told me there was a rare Filmark movie among the Spanish VHS collectors. The movie is DARK DAY EXPRESS & I don't have a clue about it. It seems it is another of those rare gems just edited in few exotic countries and there is not too much info about it.

When the Vietnam war raged...in Hong Kong???

PLEASE, if anyone have any hint or info about this two titles, they will be very appreciated. I am able to get a copy of Dark Day Express from a friend but I am not sure when, since the following days ( or weeks) I am going to be pretty busy taking care of my wife at hospital, I can't close any deal till we come back home.
Anyway, as I told above, any details about these two movies would be very appreciate.

http://www.cinecutre.com/index.php?modulo=criticas&id=606

"Ninja ninja ninja ninja ninjaaaaaaaaa ¿Ninja?" "Mmmm.... Ninja"

-¡Bigotes!

-Efectos sonoros dobles y triples

¡No!

¡No!

¡No!

¡No!

Turning the impossible into possible

One of the cool sentences I still remember from Kage No Gundan, the ninja Tv series starred by Sonny Chiba was " Turn the impossible into possible". His character Hattori Hanzo used to say it when he or his ninja group were into an impossible mission. Now I make this sentence mine in other order of things.I have been collecting IFD / Filmark / Asso Asia movies for almost 23 years, I had a big bunch of them, even some rarities that Joseph Lai himself would feel surprised to see again but there were also many other IFD titles that I was truly convinced were never released in Europe...or if they were released I wasn't aware about it even after I have been searching everywhere.

But a month ago, my good friend Jack J. warned me a South African guy who owns cinemas & dvd distribution companies had got distribution rights of many IFD movies & he was offering ORIGINAL & PRESSED copies of them throught the marketplace at Kung Fu Cinema Forums.
As soon as I read Jack's mail I contact this guy & he was kindly enough to explain to me the technical details of the movies I was interested in. He told me they were in fullscreen & not the best quality. At the begining I felt a little bit dissapointed but he told he he holds the rights from IFD & they were original copies, no dvd-r or bootleg rubbish. So I took the risk & I loan some cash from a friend & I ordered 13 titles at once.

Finally, yesterday the package, direct from the Republic of South Africa arrived home... I was so nervous that I took a photo of the package before I opened it.

The package is at home at last!

Woooowww, They are Jonathan Isgart & Wayne Archer!

When I started to see the art covers I became more anxious, I had seen those covers on IFD official website, but seeing them into dvd cases was a different feeling. I didn't know which movie I wanted to see first.

A fancy table for fancy movies

Some of the titles I ordered had video editions in France or Greece but I haven't been able to get them and also this dvds at least would not included burned subtitles in strange languages for me. Other titles, for my knowledge, hadn't been edited before. There are companies that buy the distribution rights but later for some marketable reasons they don't release the movies & they jst re-sell the rights.

The War city saga on its uncut version, the german dvds were cut into 75 minutes

After I checked all the discs, it came the most important thing: Checking the video/ audio quality. I was really worry to find scratchy & unwatchable stuff but I was totally wrong. These editions are not remastered & ultra-bit editions but the transfers from 35mm to dvd is pretty decent & much much much better than many editions I have purchased from other serious companies. The image & sound quality can be compared to Vengeance video dvds, better than many rarescope titles.

My treasurrrreeeeeeeee! It is my treasuuuuureeeeeee

After this experience, I can tell the Kung Fu cinema user named GLOBE is a real trader who is offering legal & good movies at very nice price. Of course, I also have to thank Jack J for the tip!
This is how Impossible turns possible. I thought I would never could complete my IFD movie collection & suddenly the dream has became into true!

US Catman : Lethal track review

Another IFD movie review from this wonderful website www.badmovierealm.com, you fellows may check the full review plus a video of Catman at http://www.badmovierealm.com/reviews/catmanlt/catmanlethaltrack.html

U.S. Catman in: Lethal Track

1990 Color 90min.
Starring: Jonathan James (Isgar), Kenneth Goodman, Blue Moroney, Johanna Brownstein, Tas Lehoczky, Danny Lau, and Sorapong Chatri.
Directed By: Alton Cheung (most likely an alias of the legendary shlockmeister Godfrey Ho)

U.S. Catman in Lethal Track title card

I remember hearing Mike Nelson say in an interview once that back in his Mystery Science Theater 3000 days, he and his colleagues eventually became so skilled at weeding out the absolute worst movies — the movies that were to bad even for MST3K! — that while screening potential films for the show, all it would take was one name to appear in the opening credits for the gang to immediately reject a film. In his usual diplomatic way, he didn't reveal whose names were on the instant rejection list, but I am almost certain one of those names had to be Joseph Lai.

Joseph Lai's films are thoroughly awful by every objective measure imaginable. The standard operating procedure for Lai's IFD Films, was to purchase an obscure Asian film on the cheap, film a half hour or so of scenes featuring Caucasian actors, splice the new scenes into the original film, and then cobble together an extremely loose storyline in a half-assed attempt to tie the two together. As you can probably assume, the resulting film was typically, shall we say, less than stellar.

Following this formula to the letter, Catman in Lethal Track is an absolute mess from start to finish. After our hero Sam is inadvertently scratched by a radioactive cat (I hate when people don't keep their radioactive cats inside), he finds himself blessed with superpowers. Now seeing as he was scratched by a radioactive cat, one would naturally assume his powers would be at least vaguely catlike, like the power to regurgitate enormous gooey wads of undigested hair, the ability to ignore even the most obvious of commands, or perhaps the need to scoot his furry, pampered ass across your living room carpet at lightening speeds.

U.S. Catman in Lethal Track screenshot
Catman scowl activate!!!

Instead Sam is imbued with the decidedly un-catlike powers of laser vision, super-strength, and the ability to turn televisions on and off with his mind. Curiously, despite his new cat powers, Catman never feels the need to utilize them. Not once during any of his battles does his laser vision or super strength ever come into play. He could have at least screwed with the bad guys by flipping their TV on and off while they were trying to watch Baywatch or something.

Alongside his best friend and covert CIA operative Gus (aka Pussy Boy?), Catman must track down the leader of The Holy Cheever Church, the evil Rev. Cheever (I know he's evil, because he's Russian...) and stop his twisted plans to unite all of Asia under the the communist shadow of the United Nations of Asia. Catman's actions are somewhat less heroic when you realize that most of the actual fighting against Cheever's “forces” is done by a bunch of people in Thailand, in what appears to be a decade or so earlier than Catman's exploits.

U.S. Catman in Lethal Track screenshot
“What the hell do I have to do with this movie?”

The frustrating thing about U.S. Catman in Lethal Track, and most of Godfrey Ho and Joseph Lai's output, is that taken separately, both films are pretty entertaining. The Thai footage has several interesting characters and an occasional sense of humor. The newer Catman footage is just delightfully insane and would have made an absolutely hilarious film by itself. Together they are somehow much less than the sum of their parts, with the Catman scenes interfering with the flow of the higher budget Thai footage, and the Thai storyline coming across as very boring and subdued in comparison to the hilariously demented Catman segments. What you are left with is thirty minutes or so of hilarity, spread out over an hour and a half of boredom. If you can find a way to muscle through, your patience will be well rewarded, yet I'm sure that will be too big of an “if” for all but the most hardened of b-movie fan. As is usually the case with IFD Films releases, fast forward is definitely your friend.

American Force 2: The Untouchable Glory Review

Here you can enjoy another review of an IFD war movie. The original review can be read at:
http://www.badmovierealm.com/reviews/american_force_2/americanforce2.html

American Force 2: The Untouchable Glory

Aka: Untouchable Glory, Untouchable Ninja, Ninja Untouchables, Ninja Unwatchables...Okay, I made that last one up.

1988 Color 85min
Starring: Pierre Kirby, Patrick Frbezar, Rafael Martinee, Timothy MacDonell, Renato Sala, John Whitney, Robert Zwanziger, Bruce Smith, Robert Weber, Nello Nayo, Bella Flores, Teddy Benavidez, Jose Garcia, Divina Valencia, Ronnel Galvez, and Martin Marfil.
Directed By: Philip Ko

American Force 2 title card

Most people assume they have a pretty good handle on what a bad movie really is. Sure, they've most likely seen movies like Plan 9 From Outer Space and Robot Monster. They probably own a few Mystery Science Theater 3000 box sets. Hell, they might have even made it through an entire Adam Sandler movie once. Still, most people have no idea of how truly awful a movie can be. You see, most people have never seen a Joseph Lai production.

Joseph Lai, along with his former partner in crime, Godfrey Ho, are responsible for some of the most egregious cinematic crimes ever perpetrated. Using obscure Asian films as a base, they would add scenes featuring Caucasian actors (usually in ninja get-up), concoct a very loose storyline, and then re-dub the entire mess into English. As you would expect, the resulting film would generally be an incoherent, disjointed, and thoroughly confusing affair.

American Force 2 screenshot
Uh-oh…

American Force 2 is certainly no exception. The main portion of the film seems to have been taken from an old Filipino action film. To this film they spliced in new footage and a Russian invasion storyline. The end result is the rather unconvincing tale of The Untouchables, an elite underground resistance force who are fighting the Russians and their plans to build a missile base on their land. My description of an “elite fighting force” is somewhat undermined by the fact that The Untouchables seem to consist largely of teenage girls and overweight men. To aid this motley crew in their fight, the United States has sent an elite fighting force of their own. In fact, the force is so elite that in consists entirely of one man, Brain O'Reily.

Brian, accompanied by his trusted friend, The White Tiger (I'm not making this up), quickly starts taking out the Russians' top operatives. The Russians don't take this lying down, however. The brilliant General Karpov has plans for Mr. O'Reily. The following exchange between General Karpov and his best man, Hugo, should give you some idea of the General's amazing military prowess.

Gen. Karpov: (Speaking about Brian O'Reily) “That one man can do more damage alone than twenty men together. Simply put, he's the best!”

Hugo: “We have to get rid of him then.”

Gen. Karpov: “Good idea. Of course we have to get rid of him, idiot! Hugo.”

Hugo: “Yes sir?”

Gen. Karpov: “Arrange it.”

Hugo: “No problem.”
Allow me to rephrase this scene the way I hear it:
Gen. Karpov: “Brain O'Reily is an unstoppable killing machine. He could bench press a Mac truck while walking through a minefield on stilts. He could kill you like a small dog and I heard that he counted to infinity...twice! Hugo, go kill him.”

Hugo: “Can do!”
American Force 2 screenshot
“Yes, this is Russia. How may I help you?”

You probably won't be terribly surprised to discover that our friend Hugo doesn't survive his encounter with Mr. O'Reily. After the, as in turns out, less than “untouchable” Untouchables are killed off by the suspiciously Filipino-looking Russians, Brian and White Tiger catch up with General Karpov and his men. O'Reily makes short work of them and thus the Russian invasion is thwarted. No doubt the most embarrassing defeat for the Russians since Red Dawn. Still, in that film they were up against the likes of Patrick Swayze and Charlie Sheen. In this movie they were only up against some dude named Brian, a fact which just makes this particular loss all the more embarrassing.

As far as Joseph Lai/Godfrey Ho movies go, American Force 2 is a fairly dull affair. The added scenes featuring the Caucasian actors are by far the most entertaining. Truth be told, a fully fleshed out film featuring Brian O'Reily going against General Karpov and his men would likely have been a very entertaining, albeit completely goofy, movie. Sadly the older footage that makes up the majority of the film is very slow and drags to the point of being mind-numbingly boring.

American Force 2 screenshot
The um, Untouchables.

If you consider yourself a fan of bad movies but have never seen a Joseph Lai/Godfrey Ho film, I highly recommend that you do so as soon as possible. If nothing else, it'll be good for your “bad movie street cred.” That being said, I would recommend that you skip this particular film and instead seek out one of the twenty or so “ninja” movies featuring (without his consent, I might add) poor Richard Harrison. Just grab one of those giant 50 kung fu/martial arts movie packs and you are bound to land yourself a bunch of 'em.

Wayne Archer's Interview

Last November, I was able to contact British actor & Martial Arts Artist Wayne Archer. He was kind enough to answer the questions I sent him asking about his experiences on Hong Kong cinema. When I got his answers I got quite surprised to find out he was a humble character guy, not to mention an extremely nice man who had to afford my daily harassment with questions about his time at IFD & FILMARK Thanks Thanks too much, Mr Archer not to get angry to me!

- To start with, could you tell us a bit about you and your life before you went to Asia?
Before i went to Hong Kong i was working in a coal mine but have been interested in Hong Kong movies when as many others at the time i saw Bruce Lee in Fist Of Fury and there began my love of martial arts film and my interest in martial arts in general.

-What led you to move to Hong Kong, and how did you then entered the movie world?

Before i moved to Hong Kong i went on holiday there twice and the first time was when i met Jackie Chan while he was shooting Dragonlord final scenes in Golden Harvest Studio Lot and we spent two weeks on the set every day which as you can imagine was a dream come true being such a big fan of Jackie who was so excited that westerners travelled to Hong Kong solely to meet him. The second holiday there i spent a month and once spent most of my time at Golden Harvest on set of Project A and my love affair with Hong Kong started there so my dream was to return there and live someday. Finally i took the plunge quit my job in u.k bought a one way ticket and left to fulfill my dream.

-During the 80's, it seems there were good opportunities for White or Black Westerners to appear in movies in HK and in other Asian countries, which film industries were then flourishing. How many films have you been working on?

My first movie role was purely by chance as we were at a club popular with movie stars at the time called Hollywood East and we met Tsui Siu Keung who you will im sure know from the many martial arts movies he made and he told us about a new project he was involved in which turned out to be the Shaw Bros Triad move called Heroes Of Tsim Sha Tsui East (aka Hong Kong Godfather) and hence we to Shaws Studio for a casting and demonstrated some fighting with the stunt director and was given a part and i was paid HK$400 per day but to me the money was irrevelant i would have done it for nothing just to meet and play alongside some of my heroes from the Shaws movies.

As for how many movies i have worked on i am not really sure you are probably more knowledgable than me because many were low budget and i new little about them as they were only for foreign video markets.

-You notably worked with producer Joseph Lai (IFD) on at least ten films. What are your memories of these films, Godfrey Ho and Joseph Lai? Would you have any anecdotes from the shooting, about the working methods for instance? How much did you got paid on those films?

As for the ifd movies i have fond memories mainly of my working with them but the pay was low but i had a lot of fun and was always treated well. The pay was hourly and my first i was paid HK$50 per hour but as you worked with them more this increased gradually.

-How did IFD contact you?

I cannot really recall how i first was contacted by ifd probably through some others working in films .

-Did you hold a contract with them?

we were not contracted it was purely as and when needed they called you

As for the titles of the ifd movies i do not really know because we only filmed our scenes and rarely saw the finished movies because as you know our scenes were edited into far eastern movies to give them more appeal for sale in the west.

-In many of the movies you shot for IFD you are billed as main actor or main "villlain" but,Were you signed in those movies as an actor or as an extra?

I never holded a contract with them, besides it was a running joke with the westerners that you were desperate if you worked on ifd movies but i never felt that way i had a good time always.

-Some "gweilo" actors told us Chinese crew members or people were not always very friendly with foreigners. Can you tell us something about this? How it was in general working for chinese in your case?

As for my experience with working with the Chinese crews on the whole i feel i was accepted pretty well and did not experience many problems myself but i always tried to fit in with the ways of eastern people and i think that attitude can avoid any conflict in most situations.

-On IFD , White or Black guys were usually employed to make the film look like an American made production. Most of the Western faces you see in these films were tourists, students or backpackers from Chungking Mansion with no experience in acting. In your case, you got martial arts skills. What are your martial skills, and how useful was it on those films? I know you were nicknamed the "kung fu coalminer".

You are right most of the westerners had no movie experience although in the early days i was one of the few who had martial arts experience but i would be the first to admit my skills could not compare with the actors who appeared in h.k in later years such as Mark Houghton,Jeff Falcon,Bruce Fontaine etc but unlike those guys i never had any illusions about being famous i only did the movies for fun but making money doing something you enjoy cannot be a bad thing right.

-Most of IFD works were directed by Godfrey Ho, Philip Ko or Tsui Po Wah. Do you have any memories of working with them?

As for the names of the actors i am sorry i cannot help and you are much more knowledgeable than me in fact the only movies i really remember well are the true kung fu movies which are the only ones i truly care about.

-Besides IFD, it seems you also worked for Filmswell, the company Godfrey Ho founded after parted from IFD. Which titles you worked for this company?

to be totally honest i cannot remember the names of those films i made so many i never knew what titles they used and while it was good fun the productions were really cheap attempts to pull the wool over the eyes of the european buyers and nobody really took those movies seriously.
the only movies i really remember well are the true kung fu movies which are the only ones i truly care about

-How About your works for Filmark?
i cannot remember the names of those films since we never knew the working titles or the titles they were released in the international market.

-InFilmark movie The shadow Killer, the good guy was a ninja woman billed as Cora Bentley. we saw her as a criminal partner of Bruce Fontaine in Curry & Pepper starring Chow sing Chi & Jacky Cheung as well as in another ninja movies from Filmark, Do you have any memories of her?

As for the girl you mentioned if i remember right she was the heroine and i was a villain and we shot scenes together in a derelict building somewhere in the new territories but most of her action scenes were doubled by a hong kong stuntman and i never new her name to be truthful i only spent my time with the stuntmen who i got along with more than the westerners.

-In The Shadow killer you are killed by a "ninja rocket" shot by a bazooka. Do you remember how & where was this scene shot?
somewhere in the new territories, including a forest in Saikung

- We never saw you working in the IFD ninja movies, but you got an unfinished project with Bey Logan in Taiwan titled Black ninja. Can tell us some about it?
I did work on a few of the ifd ninja movies but as for Black Ninja this was a project financed by my good friends of many years Toby Russell and George Tan and Bey Logan was only there as a reporter for Combat Magazine and was writing for them and accompanied us to Taipei so he could appear in the movie but unfortunately despite a lot of pre-production the project never really got of the ground and was shelved.

-Your face was also quite well recognized in Robert Tai's DeathCage starring Joe Lewis. What memories do you have about thee movie & Robert Tai, Joe Lewis & Robin Shou?

As for Death Cage Toby,Robert and his team were filming in Chiangmai Thailand and Toby rang me saying they needed another actor so off i went to Thailand. I have always respected Robert Tai as he was the fight choreographer on some of my favourite movies namely the venoms films produced by Shaw Brothers and i had a great time there working on the movie and i respect Robert still and Toby and i remain close friends to this day.

-After working in HK, how it was working in Taiwan?
As for working in Taiwan i cannot really comment as i only worked there once for a few days with Robert and Toby.

-Most people remembers you as the monk who bites Jackie Chan's hand in Armour of God, but we noticed you in many more shots of the movie. Do you have any anecdote about the shooting of this movie?
As for Armour of God i feel that Jackie gave me that scene in the movie as i had been a fan of his long before his popularity in the west and in general working on the movie was so much fun and i worked on it for about a month non stop. I am sorry i cannot recall any specific anecdotes about working on the movie i can only say it was so much fun and like a dream appearing with Jackie

-Later in Armour of God part two, we swa you along with other IFD faces as Jonathan Isgart, Mark King or Bruce Fontaine. What can you tell us about your experience in this movie?
As for Armour of God 2 this was a totally different atmosphere with none of the fun i encountered on the first movie and i did not enjoy the experience at all as the production team seemed uptight and this was the only movie i did not enjoy working on despite being paid very well i just wanted it to end

-Armour of god 2 was shot on location in Morocco & several places in Spain such us Madrid and Valencia. Did you stay in Spain during the shooting?

Personally i only shot scenes in hk for this movie but Bruce and the others went to Moroco on location.

-You are credited as "fighter" in Jean Claude Van Damme's Bloodsport? How did you got your part in these movie?

As for Bloodsport i got my role through a casting agency and Salon Films and worked on the movie for 7 days only shooting my short fight scene one day and the rest was just in the crowd scenes. For the record Van Damme was a bit of a arrogant ass despite never being known to anyone there and i think that showed more in later years.

-With the hindsight, what look do you take at your work in the film industry? Did you ever have a keen interest in it?

i have no ego about appearing in movies it was just a phase of my life that i will always treasure as many people never get the chance to appear with the stars they have been fans of for so long.

THanks so much for your kindness & your time to answer these questions. It has been a great pleasure to know more about one of the greatest "gweilohs" from HK cinema golden age.

Since, just down to this post there are a lot of pics of Wayne Archer's movies I don't add them to this english version. It would be too repetitive. Thanks for all your understanding.

Entrevista a Wayne Archer

A

No, no hacia falta.

Voy a serte sincero.

Recuerdo a aquella chica.
